چکیده

A long BeppoSAX observation of the Galactic Center region shows that the spectrum of the diffuse X–ray emission from the SgrA Complex can be described with the sum of two thermal plasma models with temperatures of ∼0.6 keV and ∼89 keV. The spatial distribution of the diffuse emission is energy dependent. While the hard X–ray emission has a nearly symmetric distribution elongated along the Galactic Plane, the soft X–rays (E < 5 keV) are remarkably well correlated with the triangular radio halo of SgrA East. The parameters derived for the soft component support the interpretation of the SgrA East shell in terms of an evolved supernova remnant.

Chandra Observations of the Galactic Center and Nearby Edge-on Galaxies

I review our recent Chandra surveys of the center region of the Milky Way and other nearby edge-on galaxies. Our Galactic center survey, consisting of 30 overlapping pointings, provides an unprecedented high-resolution, broadband X-ray view of a 0.8x2 square degree swath along the Galactic plane. This X-ray panorama allows a separation of the discrete source and diffuse X-ray components. Our pr...

The Origin of X-ray Emission from a Galactic Center Molecular Cloud: Low Energy Cosmic Ray Electrons

The Galactic center region near l≈ 0.2 hosts a mixture of nonthermal linear filaments and thermal radio continuum features associated with the radio Arc. Chandra observations of this region reveal an X-ray filament and diffuse emission with an extent of roughly 60′′ × 2′′ and 5′ × 3′, respectively. The X-ray filament lies at the edge of the nonthermal radio filaments and a dense molecular shell...

Characteristics of Diffuse X-ray Line Emission within 20 Pc of the Galactic Center

Over the last three years, the Galactic center region has been monitored with the Chandra X-Ray Observatory. Besides the X-ray emission from the target object, Sgr A*, diffuse X-ray emission was detected throughout most of the 17 × 17 field of view. With 11 Chandra observations through 2002 June, the total effective exposure reaches ∼590 ks, providing significant photon statistics on much of th...

The di use X - ray emission from the Galactic center with Simbol - X

Similarly to the larger Galactic ridge, the Galactic center region presents a hard diffuse emission whose origin has been strongly debated for the past two decades: does this emission result from the contribution of numerous, yet unresolved, discrete point sources ? Or does it originate in a truly diffuse, hot plasma ? The Galactic center region (GC) is however different on many respects from t...

On the Nature of the X-ray Emission from the Galactic Center Region

The origin of the X-ray emission from the central region of the Galaxy has remained a mystery, despite extensive study over the past two decades. A fundamental question is the relative contribution of the point-source and diffuse components of this emission, which is critical to understanding the high-energy phenomena and processes unique to this Galactic nuclear environment. Here, we report on...
